Coaches
The
Schroeder YMCA Swim Team has an experienced and caring coaching staff
which is led by coaching partners David Anderson and Matt Miller. Multiple
part-time coaches lend their expertise daily to each athlete and together
with Miller and Anderson, they make up one of the most stable and motivating
coaching staffs in the Midwest.

Co-Head
Coach - David Anderson
-
David, 44, is in his 23rd year of coaching and 13th at the Schroeder YMCA. Since 1985, Anderson has coached 12 Olympic Trials Qualifiers, and 2 Olympic Trials finalists, 16 Big Ten and Big Eight Conference Champions, 4 US Open Champions, 18 USA National Finalists, 6 athletes to 32 NCAA All American Certificates, 2 USA Junior National Team
members, a USA National Team Member, and 2 Junior National Champions to
five Junior National records. He has been a member of the USA National
Team coaching staff, was named YMCA Coach of the Year in 1996 and again
in 2007, and led the Schroeder YMCA to YMCA National Team Championships
in 1997 and 1999.

Anderson began coaching high school and club in his home state of
Pennsylvania in the Philadelphia area. In 1987, Dave took a graduate
assistant position with the University of Nebraska men's team and in
1989 he was named Men's Assistant Swimming Coach at the University of
Minnesota. The Gophers finished in the top 10 at the NCAA championships
four times and he earned a Masters in Education.

Dave coaches the athletes in Groups 4 – 6, high school and college
age. A graduate of Hartwick College (NY), Dave enjoys a variety of
athletic endeavors including cycling, running, swimming and ski
marathons. Anderson is married to Laura Petrie-Anderson. They have a
daughter, Grace, and the family lives in Shorewood, Wisconsin.

- Matt Miller
-
Matt is in his 8th year of coaching with the Schroeder YMCA and 11th year of coaching swimming. Miller came to Milwaukee in 1997 to teach eighth grade science and coach high school swimming. Matt coached part-time at the YMCA until 1999 when he left teaching to work full-time at Schroeder. In the last five years, Miller has guided Schroeder’s age group program into the area’s best and most recently led the 12&U athletes to the 2005 Wisconsin Long Course State title.

Since 1997, Miller has worked with athletes who have set a number of state records, countless team records, and 3 national age group records as well as having kids listed in the National Top 16 regularly. He has also coached an adaptive athlete to multiple American records and to a top 20 world ranking.
Miller graduated from Kenyon College where he was an NCAA All American 18 times, won 13 National titles, set 5 National Records, was a part of 4 National Championship Teams, and was a Senior National qualifier.
Miller is married to Amy Miller. They have two sons (Owen and Sam) and live in Colgate, WI..

Assistant
Coach - Marsha Hilliard
-
Hilliard has been coaching at the Schroeder YMCA since
1995. Marsha coaches Group 1 with a compassionate and firm
style. She has strong ties with the YMCA’s Swim Team as she grew
up on the team and she was a team record holder in the sprint free
and breast stroke events. In 1988, Hilliard won the 50 free
at the USA-West Junior National Championships and was a USA National
Qualifier. Hilliard is still competing regularly and both
her children are excellent age group swimmers.

Coach - Tom (Grampa Thunder) Michelson

Tom coaches Group 2 and has been involved with masters
swimming for the last 20 years and had swum at the state high school
level as a athlete. Michelson was on a Wisconsin State High School
Championship relay - a few seasons ago.

He has
been keenly interested in the continuous development of new techniques
in all four strokes and has also been a competitor in local and
national championship meets for two decades with the Schroeder YMCA
Masters Team.
Tom states, "I
want to use what I have learned to help young swimmers achieve the
full extent of their capabilities. I am a strong believer in making
good efforts fun. My long term hopes are for the Schroeder YMCA Swim
Team to send an ever increasing number of swimmers to the Olympic
Trials."

Volunteer
Coach - Don Jackson
-
Don is a volunteer coach for Group 1 and a Board Member
at the Schroeder YMCA. He and his wife Jessie, have had three
boys go through the YMCA’s swim team. His oldest is still
a multiple team record holder and was a YMCA National Champion.
Don is retired from the Milwaukee Fire Department where during his
career he rose from the rank of Fireman to second in command, as
Assistant Chief. When Don isn’t enjoying a round off golf,
riding his Harley or swimming with the Masters team, he does an
outstanding job with Schroeder’s youngest swimmers teaching fundamentals,
values and fun.
Assistant
Coach - Lindsey King
Lindsey joined the Schroeder staff in 2003 and graduated from Marquette University Law School in May of 2005. She is currently working with a small general practice firm downtown doing general litigation. She is from Madison where she swam for the MAC team and then for the University of Wisconsin. Lindsey is an avid endurance multi-sport enthusiast. She works with both Group 3 and the senior teams.

Coach - Kyle Bedalov
Kyle has been coaching Senior and National team athletes at the Schroeder
YMCA since 1996 and is entering his 15th season as the Divine
Savior Holy Angels High School swimming coach. His high school
teams are consistently among the top 10 at the WIAA Division I meet.
Kyle brings years of experience and exceptional organizational skills
to both DSHA and the Schroeder YMCA.
Assistant
Coach - Bill Hoppe
Bill has
had three boys on the Schroeder YMCA Swim Team since 1994 and has
been coaching at the YMCA since 2001. He has coached age group swimming
in Nevada before moving to Wisconsin and with another area team in
the '90's before joning the YMCA's coaching staff. Bill is an excellent
stroke technician and works primarily with Schroeder's future stars
- Group 1.
Assistant
Coach - Tracy Kellner
Tracy has been coaching all levels at the Schroeder
YMCA since 1997. Tracy currently coaches Group 1 and is an expert
with meet management. She was an outstanding sprinter and an NCAA
All American for the University of Iowa where she graduated with a
4.0 in Mechanical Engineering. She is the mother of two future sprint
stars Doug and Julius and is married to Schroeder YMCA Team record
holder and NCAA All American sprinter Todd Kellner.
Assistant
Coach - Jason McEvilly
Jason a
recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee with a
degree in architecture and heads up the Pirahnas - the City of Milwaukee's
Recreation Department Swim Team. Jason has been instrumental in raising
Milwaukee's swimming to new levels and he subs occasionally with all
groups.
Assistant
Coach - Dana Handel
Dana has
been with the Schroeder YMCA Staff since the winter of 2004 and she
is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in Electrical Engineering and Kinesiology.
Dana was a standout with the Oshkosh YMCA and in college at UW-M.
Dana continues to train and compete and she coaches masters, senior
and age group swimmers.
Assistant Coach - Tom Sullivan
Tom (Sully)
has been coaching at the Schroeder YMCA since the spring of 2003.
Tom swam for Marquette High a few years ago and helps with Group 3.
His compassionate disposition adds much to the mix.

Coach - Adam Mania
Please help me welcome Adam Mania to our staff, both as a swimmer and a coach. He will be starting this fall working 4-5 days per week and will also be swimming with us. As an athlete, he is extremely accomplished and through his clinics and numerous private lessons it is clear that he will also be a great coach. In 2004, Adam represented Poland in the Athens Olympics.
Adam recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin majoring in Political Science. He is truly an accomplished, highly skilled, all round athlete who can dominate many events. Below are some of his top performances in short course yards:

Assistant Coach - Ben Bartell
Coach Ben graduated from Cedarburg High School in Cedarburg, Wisconsin in 1998. Ben started his competitive swimming career at the age of 16 with his high school team.
In the fall of 1998 Ben attended college at the University of Minnesota where he swam backstroke and IM for the Gophers. In 2001-2002, Ben helped the team to win Big Ten titles and achieve a top ten finish at the NCAA Championships. A 4 time All-American, Ben also received many other individual honors from the Gophers. Ben was an Olympic Trial qualifier in 2004 in the 100 back and represented the Schroeder YMCA.
During the summer of 2002, Ben served as an assistant coach at the Schroeder YMCA, helping on deck with all groups. After leaving Schroeder, Ben was a fifth year assistant coach at the University of Minnesota. Coach Ben had the opportunity to work with the highest level athletes while on deck with Head Coach Dennis Dale.
Ben then moved on to coach with the Edina Swim Club from May of 2003 to August of 2007 and coached numerous state champions, state record holders, team record holders, top 16 swimmers, zone qualifiers and a zone champion. He also established a program to ensure the continued stroke development of the younger swimmers on the club.
Assistant Coach - Jenny Jahner
Jenny spends her time coaching for group 1. She is from Appleton, Wisconsin, a graduate from Appleton east in 2004. She grew up swimming for the Fox Cities YMCA swim team, and spent one year swimming for U.W. Milwaukee, where she is currently a senior. She plans to graduate with a major in Advertising, and Art History.
